Recently I had a chat with a friend who is a packaging designer. He complained that it took him quite a while to realize that the most important thing about packaging design is not a design draft, but a package solution.
Why is a packaging solution so important?
Whether a design looks good or not depends on the client’s choice, and its real value depends on the market sales volume of the product. After all, selling is more important to clients than merely looking good.
Most of the time, when a client wants to make a design, not only it requires the packaging costs to be controlled to the minimum, but also aims to achieve the desired effects. This involves the cost accounting of materials, the understanding of packaging material characteristics, and the understanding of printing and processing equipments.
Fundamentally speaking, the main task of packaging designers is to solve problems by means of materials, techniques, aesthetics and other creative solutions.
To make a good package solution, packaging designers need to quickly find the most suitable matching ways for design, box/bag types, process, printing, auxiliary packaging materials and so on.
This process involves the application of packaging printing and knowledge of processing; Knowing material and craft ranked first, while aesthetic is ranked second.
Seemingly simple packaging, but there is a lot of knowledge involved. To make exquisite packagings, the printing process is very particular and needs to be known very well.
Packaging printing is the printing of decorative patterns, designs, or texts on the packaging to make a product more attractive or illustrative. Generally speaking, the customized packaging price needs to be quoted according to the process required by the client, so what are the packaging and printing processes?
Hot stamping
The scientific name is heat-press transfer printing. It is referred to as thermal pad printing, commonly known as hot stamping, hot gold/silver stamping. Heat the metal plates and place the foil, the golden/silver words or patterns are imprinted on printed materials. With the rapid development of hot stamping foil and packaging industry, Anodized aluminum stamping is more and more widely used.
UV
UV
UV is an acronym for ultraviolet, "it refers also to UV transparent oil which uses UV irradiation to make cured ink . UV ink is used in offset printing, silk screen, inkjet, pad printing, and other fields. The traditional printing industry refers to the UV printing quality as the effect of the craft, is making a layer of light oil upon the printed pattern you want (lightful, matte, crystal mosaic, glitter, etc.), the main effect is to increase brightness and art effects, protect the surface, with high hardness that can resist
friction and corrosion resistance , not easy to be scratched, etc..Some laminated products are now changed to UV process, which can meet the requirements of environmental protection.
Relief embossing & intaglio embossing
The scientific name is imprinting, which is a process of making the printed object produce some changes to form patterns by pressure. It uses concave and convex moulds to plastically deform the substrate of the printed matter under a certain pressure, thereby performing artistic processing on the surface of the printed matter. They are divided into cheap ordinary corrosion version and expensive laser engraving version.
Gravure & Letterpress Color Printing
Color printing is a method of copying images or text in colors. (corresponding to this is another one that only has black and white, or monochrome printing). It involves many steps, or conversion processes, to produce high-quality color reproductions.
Monochrome printing
Monochrome printing refers to the use of one-page printing, which can be black printing, color printing, or spot color printing. Spot color printing refers to a special color required in the special modulation design as the base color, which is completed by one-page printing. Monochrome printing is more widely used, and also produces rich tones to achieve satisfactory results.
Lamination
Press a clear plastic film over the printed paper, including crystal film, lignt film and matt film. Some of them are called diffently in other places. This way is not environmental-friendly.
Pinhole
Also known as needle thread and dental floss, it is to press a semi-connected line on the paper, usually at the opening of the package.
Punching
It is to make a hole on a piece of paper or N pieces of paper according to the size required using a special punching machine.
Flocking
Brush a layer of glue on the paper, and then stick a layer of fluff-like substance to make the paper looked and felt like flannel.
Die-cutting
We called it Bie in China, it means die-cutting.
